    Fuel filter

    Hi Gang

I was driving Birdy the other day and all of a sudden it started popping when I gave it gas, like it was starving for gas. Worde under load like going up a hill. I'm assuming that the fuel filter is plugged. I looked and although I'm running a clear one up top between the fuel pump and carb there is a canister one between the tank and the pump right before the pump. Swap that one out? I thought there was some sort of bowl thing on the base of my fuel pump but upon examination its not there so must be a 58 and 59 thing only.

Later model FE fuel pumps have a canister filter at the bottom. Your original pump did not have a filter. The original 1960 carburetor had a screw in filter on the front. If you have a canister filter on your pump replace it regularly.

      Thanks John

I replaced it, sounded like it had some crap shaking around in it.

        Sounds familiar.

Hopefully you found it by replacing that filter.

Mine was crud in the gas tank stopping up the outlet pipe.

        How old is your tank?

I would venture to say 56 years old? I run the canister before and another clear one after the fuel pump, the clear one is still clear so. Another thing I found because I've always thought the car was under powered was that heat valve on the passenger side exhaust manifold was stuck shut. I started a thread about the paint cooking on my intake manifold. So I got the valve open and wired it open until it's warm enough here to take it off and gut it, but already it's like a new motor!!!

Do yourself a favor and buy a new tank or you'll constantly be replacing that canister filter because it's clogged. You wouldn't want to drink out of a can that's been sitting outside for 56 years so why would you want your car to.

Definitely, how's Calgary, probably as cold as here. We set a record for temperature.
