    Unity Manufacturing Spotlight Parts

Roberto, in Italy wrote me to ask if I could help him find a part for his Unity Co. "winged" spotlight on his beautiful '60 Tbird. He has not been able to turn it recently. Apparently, a gear that causes the spotlight to turn different directions has stopped working. Carl - partsetal did not have any parts for it. So, I called my contact, Ben, at Unity Mfg. Co., and he, as usual, was a wealth of information. This information might be very helpful to those of you who also have this problem, or might in the future. Here is what I learned.

First of all, ALL their Unity lights that have that goose neck connection that the shaft attaches to under the spotlight shell have that gear in the goose neck that goes into the light case shell. That is Part Nr. 6403-A. So it does not matter if it is a round light, a square one with a round rear view mirror, or the winged version like his with the square rear view mirror. That gear is all the same.

However.... There are FOUR gears in that light unit! There is that one which goes into the light shell casing. There is one on the end of the shaft that goes into the goose neck piece that turns and causes the gear in the goose neck to turn. He told me that your shaft for a Tbird with a HL-1 or a H1-FM spotlight mounted on the fender should be 15 1/2" long, measured from the center of the pistol grip to the bottom center of the goose neck. I will include a picture of this. It is the bottom listing you look at under the letter "C" - 15 1/2". This shaft with the gear on the end is Part Nr. 6427-C and you will see it on the web page that shows the 105-6PartsSheet.pdf file. He said that only the 6427-C shaft at 15 1/2" will work on a '58-'60 Tbird.

The third gear is in the pistol grip handle and it is Part Nr. 6405. It is at the top end of the handle and this is the one gear that he says seems to wear more than the others. He said it might be this gear that is stripped or has broken teeth in it. If either of these four gears becomes worn or broken it won't turn the other gears.

The fourth gear is on a shaft that goes in the bottom of the pistol grip and it looks like it matches up with gear Nr. 6405. The Part Nr. for this last gear is 6122, BUT they no longer have it. BUT they do have Part Nr. 5593 which is the same, EXCEPT that it might be a little bit longer and you might have to cut off a small piece off the length of it. You can see all these parts on the 105-6 Parts Sheet.

Now the good thing is that all these parts are available from them still! So are the light bulbs! It is Part Nr. U-H7635 for $47.92. They are also available through GE, Part Nr. GE H7635 (halogen). I am including the link to each of these four gears which will show you what they look like, the cost, etc.. He says that they can be ordered using your PayPal account. They WILL ship overseas. Here are the links, and as you look at them in Acrobat Reader, you can zoom in or use Ctrl + or - and see the Parts Sheet better. If you don't have a .pdf reader file, you can get one at Acrobat Reader website for free.

For the left fender mounting bracket kit the Part Nr. for 1958-1960 Tbirds is 130. However, they also have a Part Nr. 88 listed for the 1958 Tbird. There was NO right hand mounting bracket for the '58-'60 Tbirds. If you want to mount a passenger side spotlight, I can tell you how others did it.

    http://shop.unityusa.com/130-Install...Kit_p_841.html

    http://shop.unityusa.com/88-Installation-Kit_p_835.html

If I have it right, I think they have most of the parts in stock listed on that 106-6 PartsSheet list! I know they have the mounting brackets in stock.

Roberto has several options. There is a junk Unity spotlight he can buy I saw and told him about for not much money and take gears from it, if they are good. The four gear parts in it should work on your light Ben said. As long as the light has the same goose neck on it that your light has, they should work. They used the same goose neck on all their HL-1 or H1-FM and other series of spotlights that look like what Roberto has or the round light versions.

He can pull that top gear in the pistol grip handle on his light and see if that is the culprit and if the one from the junk light is good, put it in and replace the one that is in there. If that looks good, he can inspect the other gears from the junk light and see if any of them are shot. If not, he could replace other gears in his light from that junk light and hopefully fix the problem

Or he could order all four gears directly from Unity Mfg Co. and have all new gears in his light! Your choice! I asked Roberto to let me know which way he is going to go. BTW, in searching for another HL-1 or H1-FM, on eBay, I saw them for sale from between $100-$600 as I recall.

I hope this will be a big help to Roberto and anyone else who has problems with these spotlights. Here is are some pix. The first one is of the gear in the goose neck that he thought might be the culprit. The second is information on the length of the shaft. The third pic is of a HL-1 (or H1-FM) (the L is for Lincoln, but many of us have used the HL-1 on our Tbirds, or the H1-FM (Ford/Mercury, also used on Edsels).

      Unity Manufacturing Spotlight Parts

Jim Elijah ~ elijahbird7 wrote me today to say that he had a crack in his drivers side "Winged" Unity spotlight, and the right spotlight had a blown seal beam. He asked if I knew where he could get replacements. So I put my Bloodhound nose to the ground and got busy. I talked with Ben at Unity Co., whose company made these units years ago (see info below about that) and he gave me the current Unity Part # for that 5" seal beam spotlight. It is U-4405 - 50,000 candlepower, 30W 12v - $22.66ea, for the H1 series of spotlights. He emphasized that though the "Winged" version of the spotlight with the side view mirror in the rear of it is often referred to as the HL-1, they call them the H1-F (Ford), H1-FM (Ford, Mercury, Edsel) or the H1-L (Lincoln). I gather they all used the same GE sealed beam spotlight. He also said they have a Halagen Spotlight which is U-H7635-Clear-Halogen-Light, $48ea. Here is the link to that.

      http://www.unityusa.com/U-H7635-Clea...ght_p_117.html

BTW, I just saw two of these Winged H1 spotlights offered up for sale on FeeBay for just over $200 each! So you can still find them out there! I sold my NOS one years ago for a nice profit..

Jim has ordered two of the regular U-4405 spotlight sealed beams to replace those and was glad to know they are still in production. To see what his gorgeous, awarding winning (many) '59 Squarebird looks like with the dual H1 spotlights on it, look at the pics below.

Jim~elijahbird7 sent me an email with pix of the Unity H1 GE Clear Spotlights he received today to replace the two bad ones on his gorgeous '59 Squarebird. Now he has to figure out how to get the old lights out and replace them. I suggested that if he needs to, call Ben Torres at Unity, (312) 943-5200, Ext. 211. Jim said he would let us know how it goes. I think he just needs to take out the screw on the front, below the light to get the retaining piece off, pull the bulb out, disconnect it, and put the new one in.

Jim just sent me another email saying that he was replacing his old Antique Battery.

"Today, I decided to replace the Antique Battery I put in the 59, 4 years ago. It seems like it is starting to have less power, so I picked up a Bosch Type 27 F today at PepBoys. I had run across these red caps with an adapter that will fit into modern batteries. It will look semi like an old battery, but has 750 Cold Cranking Amps. I will also install that tomorrow...always a project!"

Here are the pix of the spotlights, and the battery and caps... In fact, Jim just gave me the information on where you can get the caps from.

Jim said the sun came out, so he installed his new Red Cap battery! Here is what he said...

"So, I went over to the storage space and switched the battery. Didn't put the cables completely down, but it definitely started with much more gusto. And it cost $119.95 for the battery plus the cost of caps and shipping, so more than half less expensive than another Antique Battery. Only thing I had to modify was the black adapter for the red cap at each end, because that is a recessed area, and the black adapter needed to have the side facing out just sanded down a very minor amount to fit correctly."

Jim was able to get his new Unity spotlights installed this morning. The driver side spotlight had a crack in the bulb and he also thought there was a under the dash wiring problem with the passenger spotlight, but he put the new light in to see if it might have been the spotlight. It wasn't. Also taking out that screw at the bottom of the front of the light is the way to get the bulbs out, apparently. It has been years since I last took one apart, and I have forgotten. Here is what he had to say, and a couple of pix.

"Ray, Very easy, just pull out, unhook 2 wires and put in the new bulb. The passenger side, I had expected it was a wiring issue under the dash, and the new bulb I installed there proved that...Anyway now I know for sure."

                        Unity Manufacturing Spotlight Parts

I got an email from Jim about his right hand spotlight. Here is what he had to say.

"Ray, I have been bothered since I bought this car that the angle of the mirror on the passenger side spotlight was the same angle as the one on the driver's side, so basically useless. Last night I had an idea to take the passenger side spotlight apart again today and see if I could rotate the mirror 180° and get it facing the correct direction. It just has two screws with little metal spacing parts holding the mirror in place. Moved it, then just took a plastic nut from a license plate fastening screw to make up the gap on the securing screw on one side to fit tightly..it worked!"

The reason why Jim ran into that problem is because back then, Unity did not make a right hand version for the Tbird, but they did, for the Mercury and I think the Lincoln. They also did not make the right hand mounting bracket for the Tbird. So what people who wanted both spotlights on the car would do, is buy another H1-F or H1-FM, or H1-L and install it. If they were lucky and it was the right hand spotlight, it should have installed and lined up correctly. But if it was the left hand spotlight they got, it had to be adjusted, just as Jim found out above.
I ran into the same problem with my spotlights that I was thinking about installing on Rose. I took mine apart, and made the adjustment to the right hand mirror so it would be in the correct position when I wanted to use it as the side view mirror while I was driving. However, eventually, I made the decision not to cut holes in my fenders for the install and got rid of them..

Here are a couple of pix that Jim sent. You will see the passenger side spotlight installed.

                          Unity Manufacturing Spotlight Parts

I have been doing some more research into the history of the Unity Spotlights, the fender mounted Square Winged HL-1 and the Round HL-2. I had always heard that Ford had Unity make them for Fords, (including Tbirds), Edsel's, Mercurys, and Lincolns. However, I was just looking at the Unity complete Spotlight Applications Guide for all Makes of cars. I just found that there is not one Fender mounted HL-1 or HL-2 listed in their Guide for the Lincoln! So I thought maybe they were being made for the Continentals when they were made under that name. Nope, Continental is not even on the list.

Here are the application guides for Edsel, Ford Passenger Cars, except Tbird, Mercury and Tbird. You will see a lot of the cars listed as having right hand spotlights, and mounting brackets. But NOT for the Thunderbirds! I have no idea why they did not have right hand spotlights and mounting brackets made for the Tbird. Notice also, that not only did they have left hand Fender mounted spotlights for the Squarebirds, but also the Babybirds!

For those of you interested in the entire Unity Spotlight Applications Guide, here is the link to it.

Are they still available as a unit? I'd like to add a left side one to the bird.

Hi Scott, yes you can still find them, in various condition. There are a number of them on eBay now. The more NOS ones are going to run you $300 or more. I saw several in the $200 range which look good. Here is the kicker though. Some of these people do not know what they have in the way of model number. You really need to know exactly which Model to get, like the H1-F (Ford & Edsel), H1-FM (Ford & Mercury) or H1-L (Lincoln). Though I said on the post below I never did see a fender mounted Unity spotlight/mirror listed for the Lincoln. You could wind up with a right hand unit not meant to fit on the drivers side, or the wrong mounting plate, etc.. I really do not want to get into a full blown discussion here as to what to look for, length of the rod to the mirror, mounting bracket, etc.. I can give you some detailed information over the CELL phone if you do not mind calling me. Or shot me your phone number and I can call you. Of course, if you go this route, you are gonna have to cut into your drivers side fender, and bring that rod through the dash near the washer button (if you have one).
