Hey everyone, I have a 1966 428, what should the timing be set at, I read 10 degrees below TDC, then I read 6 degrees below TDC? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Not to sound to dumb, 10 degrees would be 10 notches, I believe there are 15 notches on the wheel. ThanksComment

The factory setting is 6 degrees BTDC. As Yadkin mentioned the closer to 10 degrees you can get without pinging the better your car will run. 10 degrees is clearly marked on the damper. There are 15 lines on the damper. Each line is 2 degrees up to 30. 10 degrees would be five lines after 0.

Thanks, and I do this with a fully warmed up motor with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged?Comment

I also read that sometimes the damper moves, and throws the timing marks off, how will I know if I have this problem?Comment

Take the #1 plug out, turn the engine by hand and set the damper on TDC. Stick a 12" length of 1/4" wood dowel down the plug hole then turn the engine just a bit, first one direction, then the other. If the dowel does anything other than drop away from TDC you've got a problem.Comment

The crankshaft is the large pulley below the fan.

Hi Mike,
Glad to see another Q code investor ! Finally somebody that might get an answer to the pinging issue with these 428's. I think mine is set at @ 12 below TDC and it will ping when it gets warm and driven a little while. I've got a new Edelbrock 1406 and an Edelbrock performer intake and it runs like the wind. I'll try to set mine close or just below 10 TDC one of these days. LOL.....Anyway congrats on the Q code ! We're a proud but mis-understood bunch , ! LOLComment
