    JigSaw Puzzle

That picture that Bart posted is of the Starlite Theatre here in Schertz, Texas, near San Antonio. The one on the puzzle is probably the one in Waterloo, Iowa, about 20 miles from Waverly, Iowa where Dan Hatala lives. Living in close proximity to it, he probably visited it as a younger man and it stayed in his memory. That is my guess.

I got to looking up Starlite Drive In Theatres in Google. I found there were a lot of drive ins with that name all across the country. I guess it was a chain. They even have or had them in Canada. I think there are even a few still open. There are a number of drive ins still doing business today. Iowa has three that are still open. The one in Waterloo, Iowa though has been closed for some years. I do not think we have anymore open here in the San Antonio. For years, we had one on the southeast side, but I think it has been closed for years now.

Here is some history of the Waterloo Starlite Drive In Theatre, from the Des Moines Box Office of April 24, 1948.

WATERLOO, IOWA--The Starlite Drive In Theatre, located one mile west of here on Highway 218, reopened last week. Owners are --- and ---. The theatre, a $150,000 structure, was first opened for business last September (1947)-the first of it's kind in Iowa. Seven hundred cars can be accommodated. The theatre plans three changes of programs each week, with two showing each evening. Children under six are admitted free.

I have been trying to find a picture of the Starlite Theatre in Waterloo, Iowa so I could post it. So far, I have not found one. The Starlite Drive-In Theatre was sold shortly before the time of the building of a new Hy-Vee supermarket; all that land had become very valuable. There's absolutely no trace one ever existed there today. I have found other Starlite Theatre pictures in other states. It is an interesting thing to look up, including the history of how the first drive in was started. In New Jersey, as I recall.

For more fun, go to this website.. http://www.driveintheater.com/ Then click on List Of Theatres, and you can check on what is open or closed in your state or country...

Anders, there were three Starlite Theatres listed in Texas. Two in Dallas and one in Schertz. There are still a number of drive ins in operation in Texas. But there are far more drive ins in Canada in operation! There are two Starlite's in Canada and two Starlight drive ins, also. I am sure they are only open during the summer.

            Well,
Ruth lived in Forth Worth, just outside Dallas for quite some years and later in Fredricksburg, and that´s not far from San Antonio, so I say the chance she have been at one of these Theathres is pretty big
Also concidering the numbers of Theathers in Texas, 1958; 382. There was also one Theatre with a familiar name.... Thunderbird Drive-In, Corpus Christi, Tx

As it happens Ray, my wife, kids & I have been to that very drive in, but sadly it has now gone the way of so many large plots of land and will be a short term housing development very soon. Karratha is a remote mining based town some 850 km's south of Broome and has an acute housing shortage. Rents of up to $1800 per week are not uncommon so you can see why the drive in has been developed.

It is sad though as I do recall spending a friday the 13th night there watching Elvira, ahhhh.....nice.

Unfortunately, that is not the same puzzle as the "Starlite Theatre" Drive In puzzle. There is what looks like to be a Babybird over on the right side, but the middle car in this one is a Mustang. It is a nice looking puzzle though

No problem Bill. I'm here to help any other fellow birder out there you know.

Ray I don't see a mustang or a little 1955-57 Bird in this puzzle picture anywhere? All I see is the red '60 Bird, a yellow VW bug, and the 2-tone 1955-56 Chevy conv't. What picture are you looking at exactly?

Sorry, guys! I was looking at the wrong puzzle! I had clicked on "At The Drive In" by mistake. Yup, ya got the right one, "Starlite Theatre" and it is in a tin box! Mine is in a regular cardboard box. Glad ya got them!
