I'm concerned about Gary's process because it doesn't mention rust. My '55 Ford steering wheel had cracks but worse, those cracks let in water that rusted the steel rod. The rust caused sections of hard plastic to come off this two-spoked wheel.

Painting over rusty steel will not stop bloating and further damage. Jed Zimmerman recognized this in his process and he removed all the rust before filling with epoxy. - Dave

I just spoke with Gary regarding the issue of rust. Like Jed, he recognizes the problem that rust can cause in this process and removes all rust before filling with epoxy. He has been doing steering wheel restorations for some 30 years he said.

That's great, but his process mentions nothing about rust removal. Usually it takes a couple years for rust to rear it's ugly head. Coincidently, that happens after the warranty period is long gone.

Is he a member of Squarebirds.org? Does he offer our members a discount? These questions may sound insignificant until you realize that Jed WAS a member and he DID offer our fellow members a discount. As a result, Jed handled a lot of business for our membership in the form of seat foams and steering wheel restorations. In my book, that's giving back to our community. - Dave

Gary's Steering Wheel Restoration

I spoke with Gary this morning and told him that it has been suggested that he add his information regarding rust prevention to his website. He said he would consider that. I also asked him if he could provide us with a discount. His response to that was that he was barely making it in his business as it was and was not in a position to do so.

Dave mentioned to me that there are other companies out there that do steering wheel restorations. If anyone knows of more of them, send me the information in an email or a PM, instead of posting it here.
