I'm sure we have some body shop guys out there who know better, but your wheel's painted? Mine is solid plastic with the metal ring insert. I would suppose it depends on how long and what condition your paint is in. You might even be able to use adhesive remover before a 3M scuff pad.
If it were mine, I'd scuff the paint and use a sealer primer before re-painting.
It's a special paint, very expensive. There was a thread recently on this that resulted in a list of specialty shops that refurbish, filling splits, etc.
I've used aircraft paint stripper, regular paint stripper, lacquer thinner and when that failed, glass beads in the blast cabinet. Nothing gave satisfactory results. I wound up widening the cracks, using epoxy to fill them, levelling them and then featheredging the paint adjacent to the chips and scrapes. Painted with wimbledon white acrylic enamel with hardener. Can't remember if I used a primer or a sealer. In service 4 years and looks as good as the day I painted it.

My neighbor had a steering wheel repainted at Maaco and it looked great. Unfortunately, he sold the truck shortly after, so I have no idea how it held up. I looked at getting my steering wheel restored and found they wanted as much to do a restore as a new one cost. I went with the new wheel, as I don't have to worry about the paint wearing off.

Speaking of steering wheels . . . Have
you guys seen those retro- ones for the 57's?
They're smaller dia (15") and shallower. But orig
config & style (horn ring etc)
I wonder if it'd fit a 60? I hate having that goofy thing
the size of a large pizza in my lap.
There's a company that will re-furbish orig strg whls.
I forget the name. Pricey !!!!!!!
There are several companies who do steering wheel repairs or restorations. Here is a list of them and you can find more information about them if you look in the Advertisements Forum. Bob Monetti was not taking any orders until March, he said, but this is now April, so maybe so.
Hi Nyles, no, that is one thing that I do not have. I do not know of anyone who does that, but if anyone does, hopefully they will post for us. Then I can put it in the Advertisements Forum also!
I bought a replica from Mac's and didn't really look at it for a month. When I did, I saw it was cracked in 3 places. They took it back, naturally, but good thing I wasn't pressed for the wheel. Those are $300 plus these days, but a near perfect copy.
I just checked and Macs has the new steering wheel for about $320. They are running a coupon right now for 10% off for up to $400 and 15% off over $400, so if you needed anything else it wouldn't be hard to go over the $400 target. The coupon expires tonight, but they seem to run it pretty regularly. I also talked with Macs on a previous purchase, and asked if they gave the 10% to Squarebird members and they gave it to me. ;-)
