Are you serious? Think of the impact on aftermarket companies and garages like oil change places. I understand that I don't own the programs used in my car's computer BUT who can stop me from buying an aftermarket EFI system, or retrofitting my engine to use a carburetor??? And what does any of this have to do with changing shock absorbers, tires, batteries, brake components, spark plugs, etc., etc.

Microsoft already runs our computers. Yes, they can shut you down at any time by making parts of Windows inoperable, much the same as if you don't register a new installation.

Think about it, making it illegal for a backyard mechanic to service his own car would do the same, giving total control to the manufacturer and making you exclusively dependent on your car's maker, forever.

Thank God auto parts stores sell to anyone without a mechanic's license. I think I can still change my air filter without big brother watching.

The Automakers of the world were serious about this. It is they who tried to get this passed by the US Copyright Office. But, for the time being, they failed to do so.... But you can bet they will try again in a few years when this exemption expires.
