Here in NY the weather was beautiful yesterday so I decided to drop the fuel tank on the bird.
I soaked the drain plug, fuel line nut and tank strap bolts with some liquid wrench. The drain plug was completely frozen. I even tried vice grips but all that did was round it out. I ended up draining the tank from the fuel inlet. I also managed to kink the fuel line so that will have to be replaced also. The one thing that I thought was going to give me trouble didn’t; the tank strap hardware came off without any issues.
The more fuel that came out the nastier it smelt.
Once I got the tank out and completely drained, I could hear all the sediment and crud sloshing around in there.
Next weekend I’m going to wire brush the undercarriage from the differential back, give it two coats of semi-gloss POR-15 and install the new tank and sending unit.
That rear bumper seems to have been jacked up a few times to many. You know you could use the one from the ´58?
The 58' is long gone. The rear pumper had a crease in the middle of it anyway. I should be able to have this one straightened out before sending it our for chrome. Someone also decided to jack the rear end up from the spare tire bulge on the trunk pan. They left a nice sized dent there.
Please check out my thread in the Events section for a classic car show to benefit Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. I will be bringing my Bird and hope to meet many other squarebird members.
I didn't get that far yet. I have the tank out; next weekend I'm going to wire brush the under carriage from the banjo back so I can POR-15 it before installing the new tank. I'll definitely be grounding that tank!
Got some more work done on the bird this weekend. I spent Saturday wiring brushing and cleaning the undercarriage from the banjo back. Then I gave it two cotes of semi-gloss POR-15 rust proofer. Today I prepped and installed the fuel tank. I’m ordering a set of stainless steel pre-bent fuel lines; they should arrive in about two weeks.
