    62 Tbird Engine Oil

    Hi All,

I was wondering what type of oil is recommended for the 390-v8. I have heard some are using 20w50. Castrol makes that type with therma-sheild. I was wondering if anyone uses this and if anyone uses a Zinc additive to the oil. Thank you to all who reply.

    Cheers

Ebay (free Shipping) had the best price per case after you add shipping.

I use Castrol GTX 20-50 in all my older cars (They're ALL old!) and have done so for years.

It even says on the side of the container 'suitable for older vehicles'.

Don't know what the zinc level is like.

              Engine Oil

I ended up buying a case of 20m50 Brad Pen Oil. Due to its high Zic/Phos content it was highly recommended from members here as well as a few auto restorers I talked too. I let the synthetic oil drain for several hours before putting it in. The engine is singing now. I can hear the engine running smoother and it also runs cooler. The temp gauge is reads lower now that the new oil is in. I took it out last night in this heat wave and it runs noticeably cooler. I am a fan of this oil now.

Zinc is important for flat tappet cams. You should look into that.

Personally I think the zinc thing is over-rated after initial break in on a new engine but glad you found something that works for your car.

See this thread also and the link to the Hot Rod magazine article.....
