Thunderbird Illustrated Article on Golde Top

    hi!
I acquired the Spring 1975 issue of Thunderbird Illustrated. The article that got my attention was "The End of the Squarebird Era". Was not sure what it was about but had to read it.

Essentially it is an overview of the 1960 line (chastised by one magazine as "least changed") but what it really focuses on is Golde Tops and the one owned (then) by Jim and Mary Miller.

It has, for example, all of the costs - base and options. Hence while the Golde Top had a base cost of $3755, as it rolled out the dealer's door it was up to $5634 ! ( I do have to laugh when I see that $9.50 was charged for backup lights. The nerve!! )

At any rate, my reason for the post is to see if there is any interest in scanning the article in and making it available for people. The color photos will suffer but the 7 page article might be worth having. We could probably make it available through the Squarebird site. The copyright is to "Thunderbird Publications" so I suspect it has long vanished (I admit to being no legal scholar, however!)

Golde Top (Sunroof) forum > Thunderbird Illustrated Article on Golde Top

I have the complete set and I have been working on getting permission to post the pertinent articles on the Forum, probably in the TRL. Please do not post anything from "Thunderbird Illustrated" until we get a legal opinion regarding the copy right. John, you should have received an email regarding this. We do not want to take any action that might violate the copy right on these publications and make us liable. So please hold off and if we get clearance, I am already setting up a web page to put these articles of interest into it. Thanks!

Who would you get permission from??? The publisher, Thunderbird Publications as listed, no longer exists.

        Did not get email . . .

Thunderbird Illustrated Article on Golde Top

          Hi John,

You should have received an email from Dan Leavens and one from me about this. I just re-sent it to you to both the email addresses I have for you. We probably would not have a problem if we used the material, because Jake Vandersluis passed away in 2006. The magazine has not been published since 1976, and years ago, Thunderbird Productions went out of business. But his wife, Lynne Vandersluis is still alive, as far as I know. When she gave sets of the publication to the Classic Thunderbird Club International, she did not give them the copy right. Same thing applies when Alan Tast, as VTCI President back then, got copies from Jake when he was still alive. VTCI did not get the copy right. I am in the process of trying to get in contact with Lynne Vandersluis to see if she will give us permission to use the material.

If any of you are an attorney specializing in copy right law, or know someone who is, please give me a telephone call. I would like to talk with you about this. I want to get this nailed down before I start using articles. We do not want to be held liable for violation of copy right laws.

Hi Kev! We have the article. It is a matter of having permission to use that material with copyright on the Forum. We are working on getting a reading on copyright laws, or getting permission from Lynne Vandersluis.

I bet I was bidding against either you or Ray John on a copy of "Thunderbird Illustrated" on Ebay a week or 2 ago.

Hi Jon, It wasn't me. You might have been bidding against John. I have a complete set of "Thunderbird Illustrated" thanks to the generosity of our fairly new member, Mark ~ AVANCIER THUNDERBIRD, who donated them to the Forum. As soon as we get the copyright issue squared away, I plan on putting up the articles in these eight magazines that apply to the Tbirds this Forum supports.

I think I just bought mine on Ebay as opposed to bidding on it. . . . Vol 1 No 3.

The same issue is still available for $11 (includes shipping) at

Thunderbird Illustrated Article on Golde Top

Just so you know, I am working on putting the "Thunderbird Illustrated" articles that apply to the 1958-1966 Tbirds into the Technical Resource Library in my "spare" time. simplyconnected has been taking this Old Dog to school and teaching me how to work with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat to clean up, border, and set up these pages better. It IS possible to teach an Old Dog new tricks. The problem is in remembering everything he is drilling into me! This Old Dogs memory might not be as good as it used to be! It seems that all I want to do is to lay on the porch and scratch my ear with my hind leg trying to remember what he taught me! But I am getting there and in a few days, I hope to have the first six articles from the first volume, editions 1 & 2 online. I will let you know. Dave is a very good teacher and I much appreciate the help.

I appreciate all the time and effort Ray is putting into this project for the benefit of ALL of us. After he is done, you will all want to see his compiled PDF, which includes the articles pertaining to Thunderbirds, in chronological order, and with bookmark searches.

Thanks again, Ray. You're doing all the work, but we appreciate your hard efforts, dealing with the learning curve. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat are heavy-duty programs that produce beautiful results. I can't wait to see the finished book. - Dave
