The P must stand for poor quality.
I've owned Fords with this distributor and cap for 40 years, and NEVER had anything like this happen. They guy at A's had the nerve to accuse me of installing the rotor wrong. No, I told him, it's cheap China parts. I had my old cap with me to show him what a quality part looks like.
I got my money back and this gets a one-star review on A's site.
Then I ordered a new MSD 5506 at Jegs.
