They retain the cam in a pre 63 block. The blocks went through several changes around '63 including a change to the cam retention plate, and mounting hole for alternator . Lots of the buttons and springs got tossed. New cams and gear sets are made for the retainer plate type, in fact you must remove the 'C' washer as the new cam sprockets have them built in.

        Cam ...

you can convert to the newer style, but depending on the block you may have to drill and tap or just tap the block for the new thrust washer bolts. Not as big a deal as it might sound. Mike

If you follow Mike's suggestion, you can get a true roller cam for your FE. They're cheap, last three times as long, and available everywhere.

Time your camshaft and unleash hidden HP in that FE. - Dave

deuce, it's up to you of course but if you prepped the block for a modern cam and gear set, why bother with the button? You'll be the only one that knows, and the plate was an upgrade from the factory. Did you use an adjustable timing set? Good luck and have fun with the project, Bob C

There is not as much clearance to the timing cover with the newer camshaft gear as the newer design has a spacer included with the set. So you don't want to use the button and spring. The retention plate holds the cam in place with the new bolts that have been drilled and tapped into the block.
