Temperature Sending Unit

Can anyone explain why a fuel gauge would operate but a temperate gauge would not? Are they on separate fuses?

There are no fuses. If the temp gauge doesn't work it's either the gauge, the sender or the wiring. If the fuel gauge works then the CVR is probably ok. It controls both units.

check the wiring, first on the block, center front of the intake is the sender unit, might be unplugged, then if that's OK pull the bezel off the gauges (just a press fit for the chrome ring) then there are 3 little tiny slot head screws, then slowly pull out the gauge cluster, there are 2 wires going into each, check they're plugged in.
If that's OK likely your sender is pooched!

Temperature Sending Unit

Hey All,

My fuel gauge is functioning but the temperature needle does not move. Can someone tell me (or show me with a photo) where the temperature sending unit is in the engine bay? I was speaking with Ray who was told it is on the intake manifold (that's between the valve cover on driver side and the carb)? I'm not sure exactly what this would look like. But I want to make sure it was not disconnected or missing. I could buy a new fuel gauge but I don't want to if its something simple like hooking up the temp sending unit. Or replacing a wire.

I am very picture oriented and could usually follow directions that way best. Thanks!

You can't miss it, front of the intake manifold, behind the distributor, has a wire (maybe red / white) coming out of it. It's brass on top and the only one there

Here's the temp sender. My wiring is aftermarket - your color may be different. Right next to the distributor

check the wiring behind the gauge too, if anyone has had their hand behind the dash they get unplugged really easily.

Good advice. Can I just reach from under the dash and feel whether this is plugged in or not? Or is it more challenging than that? I have never messed with this before.

In any case I will have it looked at by a mechanic next week I was just curious.

It's easiest just to pull the gauge, it's literally 3 small slotted screws, you'll need a screwdriver small enough, like the one you get in an eyeglass repair kit. It's a 5 minute job, while you're behind there you can replace any worn out bulb, or do like I did and replace the gauge bulbs with LED. Now my dash glows green!

Oh I can certainly do that. I like jobs I can handle. Will check this out. Anyone have a photo of what it should look like from the back? That way I can see if anything is unplugged?

Heres your dash from the back. If you can blow it up you can see the labeling I did.

If you are going to work anywhere under or behind the dash make sure you disconnect one of the battery cables. It doesn't matter which one.
