Electric Windshield Wiper Install

Rockin' Kev knows that I am in the process of installing the electric windshield wiper motor in place of my vacuum unit. He sent me this tip that probably should be picked up and put in the TRL, JohnG. Anyone else about to go through this installation needs to know what Kev said. Here it is.

"Top tip for fitting the wiper motor kit in, wrap duck tape around the old spindle that has the wire cables on so they don't fall out, and when installing the wiper motor switch in the same place as the original make sure you leave a gap behind the white toggle switch to the dash, as the two speed wiper switch rotates in and out as you turn it, unlike the original you just turn the knob and the wipers get faster.

Remember this as loads of people don't and then they think the switch is broke.

"I am sure i posted something like, dont put the old white knob on the new wiper shaft, snug up to the chrome bezel or you will not be able to turn it, you see its a two speed setting , as you turn the knob to the right the shaft needs to go in then out, like on a groove, so if you put the white knob too far close to the chrome dash bezel the knob will not turn/move.
I posted this back in 2002!!"

He also said in the thread above that you do not have to use the black knob that comes with the kit. Use the white one and people will not know you have electric wipers until you turn them on.

windshield washers

You can also get a switch for the electric wipers that has delay and washer capability. You can use a late model electric pump and this switch to get washers. Imagine wipers that work with washers that work...radical concept. remember you need the long shaft on the switch. G

If I might add to Grant's post;
you may use a stock Ford dash knob (as I did on the Galaxie) instead of the black knob that is supplied with the switch. CLICK HERE for my electric wiper retrofit.

This is a great improvement to your car. The vacuum wipers are terribly insufficient and weak compared to the electric. Correction: There IS no comparison. It's like comparing disk brakes to shoe brakes. Once you convert, you will never go back. - Dave

My T-bird is a fair weather car, so I'm sticking with the vacuum wipers and odd washer system. To me, you can't get any cooler than that rube Goldberg windshield washer. Of course I need to get mine working yet........I have 2 units on which the little pump lost to the 350 HP 430. Did anyone rebuild one of those pumps and have any tips?

Okay, Mike. I will try to get some good pix of what has to be done. It is not that difficult. Keep in mind what Kev said to do also. I will probably also add the windshield washer mod too, since I have the sliding button in the dog leg already and have had the squirt tubes all along. The instructions that come with the electric wiper motor are pretty straight forward, I think.

Thanks. Yeah, my car did not come with the washer option so I'd need to come up with something. There's also a guy here in NY that rebuilds the vacuum motors. I may opt for that as my car still is original. http://www.wiperman.com/
