Anything between fuel pump rod and eccentric?

Put a deposit on a 59 J code. Was converted to electric fuel pump and the stock pump is not there. It is making an intermittent noise like the fuel pump rod is still there. Owner claims fuel pump rod was removed and that there is some "lifter" that rides between eccentric and rod (searching around net, I can find no mention of such "lifter").

I suspect he put engine back together (supposedly rebuilt) with mech fuel pump, that crapped out, and the fuel pump rod is still in there when he converted to electric. Would the rod make an intermittent metallic tick if it was left in there with no fuel pump?

Engine runs great otherwise, except maybe some valvetrain noise, but may just be normal, as I have never an MEL run before.

I'm not aware of anything between the rod and the eccentric. There is an access plug to remove the rod so you should be able to get it out if it's still in there.

OK, thanks, I will get confirmation on if the rod is really out or not?
