    Yellow Rose's Engine Bay

Here is another engine bay you could cook on, I guess! I took off that aftermarket air cleaner after getting a new filter for the original one that I had chromed some months back. I have been waiting to get her back from the paint shop. Now that she is, I decided to "crown" her with her old original AC cleaner. I think she looks sharp with it back in place! Here are a couple of pix. I should have had better light. First the old one and then the original one.

    Looks Good!

How much to plate the air cleaner assembly?

BTW- You need to get rid of that upper radiator flex-hose...

      Hi Gary,

It cost me $70 to have the AC cleaner assembly chromed. As for that upper flex hose, I am assuming you said that because it looks unsightly. It was on the car when I got it. It is one of those things that I have not gotten to yet. But that is an easy replacement.

        More than reasonable!

Do you guys have a shop you use on a regular basis?

I was only ragging you about the hose...

Yes, I thought it was a reasonable price also. When Bart and I were looking for companies who do chroming, we shopped around. We found that some places charge an arm and a leg to do chroming. Some quotes I got were twice or more than what I got from Southwest Chrome Plating. Their San Antonio office is located a short way out of town headed east towards Houston. They collect all their metal to be chromed during the week and on the weekend drive it to their plant east of Dallas, also out of town. Usually, the following week, one of them drives up with a new load of metal to be chromed and brings back the chromed parts from the week before. You go in on Monday and pick it up. They do very good work, are very good to work with and I have always thought them to be very reasonable in pricing, compared to the other places we shopped our parts to.

As for the hose, it is a little disconcerting with that green striping on it. It does need to come off and a regular black one, more original, put on in place of it.

Ray, she looks much better with the proper air cleaner.

I agree with the rad hose comment. Mac's has the upper hose with Ford script for $20.95.

              Hi Howard,

Thank you! I think so also. However, I cannot get that AC cleaner unit to sit level on top of that Edelbrock carb! It will go on, but at a down angle towards the driver side valve cover. I can get it to go on level, it seems, but not with the snorkle pointing the direction it is supposed to. Something underneath there must be keeping those clips on the bottom of the AC cleaner base from sitting in right. I cant get to the other side in the garage to check into that. I will have to check it out when I back it out of the garage next time. It was to hot to mess with it today. It is 100 degrees here today, or was. We just had a cold front come through, or something, and dropped it to 97! Actually, daytime heating is starting to drop off now.

As for the hose, thanks for telling me that. I should replace that one and it will be nice to have one that says Ford on it. That is something else to get!

                Ray,

                EDELBROCK offers spacers to allow the air cleaner to sit evenly;

                PN #8093 1/2" H
                PN #8092 3/4" H

I think you will find the interference @ the choke housing.

                  Ray,

You will have to excuse me for gigging your ride. I am anal retentive-obsessive-perfectionist.

Your car is beautiful and has gotten a lot of attention/detailing/love from you and I realize all that you have put into it.

But it is little details like that radiator hose that distracts an observer's eye and causes him/her/it/mutant not to appreciate all that you have put into it.

The car is beautiful and again this was just an observation and not speaking negatively of you or the BIRD.

                    Hi Gary,

Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated. Also for the Edlebrock part numbers for the spacers. I will get in contact with them and order one. I dont want to push that cleaner up to much higher because there doesn't look to be a lot of clearance between the top of the unit and the trunk lid as it is! I think I will try the 1/2" one first and see if that does the trick. I certainly want to use that chromed original style cleaner.

Ray, under the the bottom air cleaner housing are tabs that 'key' the housing to the carb so the housing sits in the proper orientation. Replacement carbs such as Edelbrocks are not keyed the same as our original since it's a generic carb.

The solutions I've seen in the past are either to rotate the orientation till it sets down level, or bent the tabs that obstruct the air housing from setting level in the correct orientation, however the air cleaner may rotate as the tabs won't lock it into postion. Maybe the spacer are another solution.

Make up three or four modeling clay pyramids and put them randomly on the AC housing (under hood sub-frame).

Close, then open and you will be able to measure how much clearance you have.

Gary, now THAT is using your noggin! Unfortunately, I do not have any modeling clay, but I can get some. That is an excellent suggestion and one that I might resort to. What I really need to do is to back the car out, pop the hood the rest of the way up, and see if I can find out what the base of that cleaner shell is hitting. I did talk with Edelbrock, and he said that it might be hitting the gas intake line. Once I get her out in this near 100 degrees heat again, I will check that out. It is just way to hot for me to be playing mechanic in this heat. I dont really want to bend those tabs on the cleaner case over, but that might be something that might fix the problem also. In the meantime, until I can figure out how to get it to fit correctly, the aftermarket one will go back on while I am driving the car.
