    a few MEL questions

A guy on another message board has some questions about these engines, and I bet someone here on Squarebirds would be able to help him....

    See below:

"I've read through a good bit of the posts on MEL's, but have yet to see How do I identify the block -- year, ci, etc. Can someone suggest where to look and what to look for to know what the engine is for the 58-60 MEL's?!

Also, what would be needed to use a Ford manual transmission with a MEL from 58-60 time period? I suppose the crank would have to be machined to accept pilot bearing; can that be done without pulling the crank? "

    a few MEL questions

Some questions came up regarding where to find engine build information for the '58-'60 430MEL engine. Below you will find an extract from the Vintage Thunderbird Club, International (VTCI) Official Factory Specifications (OFS) available to VTCI members in book or CD form. The picture shows the location as to where to find the engine build information and on the right side, the break down of the coding. Someone else will have to answer the technical questions. Here is the picture.

      a few MEL answers. . . .

      Yellowrose,
Thanks for the information. I posted the questions originally on HAMB or MEL forum, and Dakota Boy was kind enough to put them on this forum. I've now joined three forums trying to search down the info!!

Looks like I'll have to check one more time for the date code on my engine block!

I was just reading through and came across this post (insomnia).

The 58/60 MEL (also FE) component ID system(s) is unique in that during this period, three distinct numbering systems were used by FOMOCO.

I am pretty certain that I posted on the MEL forum several years ago 1958 MERC TSB's giving this information. It (they) should still be there.

          They're everywhere!

Speaking of these motors, at this years Beach Hop here in NZ I saw the personalised licence plate 430 58 on a Squarebird, just shows these birds fly far and wide!!
