    Helping out at UM-Madison, WI

Friday, July 1, I had one of my most interesting days ever! I had the extreme pleasure of helping out a couple of PHD student instructors at the UW Madison with High School Summer Camp. The 15 high school age students were from around Wisconsin and Korea. They are part of the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth. I was asked if I could bring one of our classic cars to the UW campus to help teach the basics of automobile mechanics. I drove our 1965 Mustang to the class. I also took along a Ford Model T carb, a Model T timer, a vintage distributor, a foot warmer, various Model T tools and today's counter parts, gas sticks and Eric's cutout Model T. I arrived early so I could sit in on some of the classroom instructions. I took math all 4 years in high school and we never had anything as complicated as they were teaching these exceptional students. Many of them wore t-shirts with NERD on the back. They wore them with pride. I explained the various strokes a 4 cycle engine goes through. Explained carburetors and how they have been replaced with fuel injection. I talked about today's gas gauge and how it tells us how much gas you have, how many miles left in the tank and the average miles per gallon. I then gave them each a gas stick and explained how it was done 100 years ago. The feedback I received from the PHD student teachers was very positive. Their project for their July 4th 2 1/2 hour morning class is building their paper Model t. The students have very little free time. Even their non class room time is organized. I really enjoyed the day and hope I get asked to meet with them again. The attached is a photo of the students and their instructors.
