1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible interior shown in Black Vinyl
Thunderbird Convertible interior shown above in Black Vinyl (code 56). 1966 would be the last year for a factory Thunderbird Convertible until the 2002-2005 Thunderbirds.
Note: The 1966 interior featured a pleated design at the top section of the seat backs, which extended about two thirds of the way down, terminating at a horizontal strap that extended from bolster to bolster. Below this strap, was a square biscuit design, with a button mounted where the seams intersect. The biscuit design was continued onto the seat cushion, without the buttons. Strangely, the pattern on the front seats does not exactly match the rear seats.

Note 2: The Hardtop model featured a traditional vinyl perforated headliner with polished roof rail moldings, color-keyed to the interior. The Town Hardtop and Town Landau had a two piece molded vinyl headliner with crater pattern with color-keyed moldings and a center roof console. For more information on the molded headliner, see our 1966 Thunderbird Contoured Headliner page for color availability, and 1966-67 Thunderbird Contoured Headliner Repair page for repair procedures (both links open in new window or tab).
Note: Trim codes listed above in bold denote trims for optional Reclining Passenger Seat with Adjustable Headrest.
What Are "Appointments"?
Appointments include the top section of the instrument panel and radio speaker/defroster grille assembly, coved section of the instrument panel, instrument cluster assembly, instrument panel upper moulding assembly, clock housing, console and console access panel assembly, glove compartment door, and carpeting. However, there are a few exceptions. The top section of the instrument panel and defroster grille assembly are always Black on White Pearl and Parchment interiors. These two color combinations also do not have carpeting on the bottom of the door panels. This is due to the assortment of different colors teamed with White Pearl and Parchment.

The White Pearl with Black and White appointments interior features a White console and console access panel assembly, and glove compartment door.

The Silver Mink, Red, Aqua, and Ivy Gold interiors all feature a darker shade on the top section of the instrument panel and defroster grille assembly, as well as the coved section of the instrument panel.

*This is the only Parchment interior trim code that is correct with carpeting on the door panels; all of the vinyl and leather trims in this color have parchment vinyl instead of carpeting at the bottom of the panel.

1966 Thunderbird interior in Black Leather
Optional Black Leather and Vinyl interior (code 66) shown above. The Reclining Passenger Seat option was provided with all leather trim installations.
Note: Reclining Passenger Seat with Adjustable Headrest was a mandatory option with Leather trim, and was included in the $147.03 additional cost of Leather.
Ford's exclusive reversible ignition and door keyThe standard vinyl trim used in 1966 was a soft, expanded vinyl. While this material is very close to genuine leather in appearance and feel, it does not have the healed scars that are inherent with this natural material. Automotive Mileposts recommends you thoroughly research any car before purchasing it. Look closely to determine if the material truly is leather. Genuine Leather trim was not a popular option on these cars, partially due to the deceiving nature of the standard vinyl trim.
Caution: Several sources list White Leather as a trim option for 1966 Ford Thunderbirds. These same sources also fail to list Parchment Leather as a trim option. To the best of our knowledge, White Leather was not available as a regular production option. It is possible that a few cars may have been equipped with White Leather as a Special Order, but we have never documented any. We have been inside hundreds of 1966 Thunderbirds over the years, and have come across a few with Parchment Leather, but never any with White Leather.

Interior trim colors listed above in bold apply to all-vinyl as well as genuine leather trims.
Levant grain vinyl was used on all Town Landau models for 1966, with a specific seam pattern that featured seams located at the edge of the roof, instead of having them located somewhat towards the center of the roof as in years past. This seam style, for some reason, is difficult to duplicate when installing a new vinyl roof today. Makes you wonder what Ford had that could do it in 1966 that isn't available today!
