Mid-year color changes occurred during February, 1964.
On Friday, November 22, 1963, the printing presses that print the National Geographic were busy finishing up the January, 1964 issue. The presses were stopped
when news of President Kennedy's assassination was received. An extra page
was added to the magazine, with words of tribute to the slain President.
By the time the magazine started to reach customers in December, 1963,
the nation would have started to recover from the loss. The Thunderbird
pictured at the left was featured in an advertisement on page one of that
issue.
